Sustainable Fashion Tool
Working with a team of Industrial, Fashion, and Graphic Designers from Pratt's Center for Sustainable Design Studies, we developed a web based tool for the implementation of sustainable fashion design strategies for the Brooklyn Fashion and Design Accelerator. The fast fashion industry is a highly unsustainable system, but with little guidance as to how sustainability can be applied to fashion, it has been challenging to move towards better industry practices. This tool acts as a sustainable database, offering strategies for designers to recognize in their own work, or new strategies for them to begin to implement.
The web tool leads the designer through seven categories, each encompassing numerous implementable sustainable strategies. As the designer moves through the tool, they explore different strategies and decide which ones they are already implementing, and which ones they would like to implement in their future designs. These are kept track of as checks (things designers on on their way to doing), and pins (things they would like to do in the future).
The designer graduates the tool with the option to download a PDF that includes a concise info graphic that can be added to a portfolio page or to hang tags for garments.
This tool will be of use to both practicing professionals and students. The first version of this web tool will be up in July 2015, and will be a great step forward for sustainable fashion.
